I have attended these meetings before and can tell you that they are always informational. I feel relaxed when I attend and I always feel that their is a receptive sharing of information. Please read further, this letter is from one of the parents who organized this group. The group is called S.E.A.D.S and meets on the last Wed. of the month at the E.O.P building in Elmira:
The next meeting is on January 28th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm,
650 Baldwin Street, Elmira:
I know that everyone does not belong to the Elmira City School District, but I want to mention some things that I have been working on. I also want to mention to everyone that what we work on in one school district can spread out to all the districts. One thing that I would like to really encourage is that we need to try and meet together as much as we can. As a group, we have more power in things than if one of us just tries to do it by themselves. Even if we write things down and one or two people make a report. I also know about how things can be and sometimes the issue of not using any names. Some of you probably know that I have met with Dr. Bryant, and I can just say that he has not been very receptive in our involvement. I now have a school board member who has some questions for us, and seems very receptive at this time. I know we all get very busy, and it can get hard to get away in the evenings. I also want to let you know that when you come to a parent meeting, you can bring your children. We have had children come and color at the table while we meet, or play a game. I'm not out to throw a bunch of issues at the district. My primary concern is to promote communication between the parents who have children with special education needs, and the school district. I also want to mention that a cut in school aide could effect our children with special needs tremendously. It is something we all need to keep an eye on and our ears open to gaining information. I want to encourage as much participation as I can in parents coming to our meetings at the last Wed. of each month at 6 p.m., at EOP. Pass the word to other parents who would like to get involved. I want to start this year on the right foot and encourage more parents to get involved, and also in encouraging the involvement of our group in the community. Thanks to all who have been involved! We welcome new people to become involved, gain the support of other parents who have similar issues, gain information from each other and guest speakers, and also have some recreational fun. Our group is all parent run, and made up of what we want to get out of it! I also want to mention that we enjoy professionals sitting in at our meetings, and encourage their input in regards to giving helpful information to the parents.
Thanks for your time!
Joyce
